A quiet desk for board and turn-based games

Nine free Android titles, read the way you would read a rulebook: what the rules ask of you, how a game unfolds from the opening to the last move, and how long a sitting really takes. No hurry, no scores of our own invention.

  • Nine titles on the desk, every one free to download
  • Ratings copied from Google Play as shown in Ireland

The nine on the desk

About the desk

How the catalogue is kept

Nine entries, revisited when a game changes, rather than a list that grows every week.

Every title here is installed on an ordinary Android phone and played across several evenings before a word is written. We are looking for the same things each time: what the rules actually ask of a new player, whether the first game teaches enough for the second, how a turn feels once the novelty has worn off, and whether a session can be put down in the middle without losing anything. The notes are written afterwards, from memory and from the phone, never from a store description.

The question underneath all of it is simple. Does a decision matter?

The number beside each title is not ours. It is the Google Play score for Ireland, copied exactly as the listing showed it, and it moves as other people rate the game. Our own judgement is deliberately kept in plain sentences: who a title suits, what the first hour feels like, and where it stops repaying attention. Where a game does something we would not recommend to a newcomer, that is said in the note rather than hidden in a number.

The desk is kept small on purpose — nine entries, revisited, rather than a list that grows faster than anyone could read it.

The catalogue

Nine entries, in the order we would hand them over

Boards first, then the turn-based worlds that grew out of them. Each line carries the developer, the Google Play score for Ireland and a short reading of how the game plays.

ChessCraft

A chess workshop rather than a chess app: you can redraw the board, invent pieces with movement rules of your own and decide what counts as a finished game. Playing your own variant against the built-in opponent is the fastest way to find out which ideas hold up over a whole game and which collapse on the third move. Matches run against the AI or with a friend online, and most sit inside a quarter of an hour.

Go Game - BadukPop

Go, taught patiently: short lessons first, then thousands of tsumego problems to work through at your own pace. The teaching is the strong part, because each problem is a shape you will meet again in a real game and the app explains why the answer works rather than only marking it correct. Play against the AI or against people, on the small nine-line board and on the full nineteen.

Checkers - Online & Offline

Draughts with fourteen rule sets gathered into one app, from the English and Turkish versions to Brazilian and international. Written down the differences look tiny, whether a king slides one square or many, whether a capture is compulsory, and in play they change the shape of the whole game. Solo games against the computer, two players on one device and online tables are all here.

The Battle of Polytopia

A compact turn-based strategy on a small square map: one tribe, one starting technology and a fixed number of turns in which to explore, grow cities and research. Because the map is small and the turn count is firm, a decision about where to expand is answered within minutes instead of hours. A solo map takes about half an hour; games with friends run a turn at a time over days.

Shattered Pixel Dungeon

A turn-based roguelike that moves only when you do, which leaves room to think a step through before you take it. Every run redraws the floors and hands you unfamiliar items to identify, so most of the depth sits in deciding when to spend what you are carrying. Free, open source and entirely offline; a run lasts from twenty minutes to a long evening.

Moonshades Offline Dungeon RPG

An old-school grid crawler: one square at a time, mapping as you go, with encounters resolved turn by turn. The long game is character building, where skill points, equipment and the order of your party count for far more than reaction speed. It runs offline from start to finish and saves wherever you stop.

Dungeon Ward: Offline Games

A compact offline crawler built around turn-based encounters and a steady stream of equipment to weigh up. Progress arrives in small increments: a better item, one more level, another floor added to the map. It suits short sittings, since a single floor rarely takes more than a quarter of an hour.

Path of Adventure: Text RPG

Almost all of this one is text: a paragraph tells you where you are, and you pick from a handful of options underneath. Inventory management carries the game, because each item has a limited number of uses and choosing what to carry and what to leave behind is the real puzzle. Runs are short, it works offline and it reads comfortably one-handed.

Darkrise - Pixel Action RPG

The single entry on this desk that runs in real time rather than by turns. It holds its place on the character sheet: three classes, a skill tree that repays planning between runs, and equipment choices that read like a tabletop build. Levels are short and the whole thing works offline.

Side by side

Six titles, compared on play

Six of the nine entries, set against each other on the things that decide an evening: pace, company, length, difficulty and whether the phone needs a connection.

How the six play
Title Play style Modes Typical sitting Learning curve Away from a network Editor’s read
ChessCraft Turn-based, editable rules Solo vs AI, online 10–20 min Gentle start, deep end Yes, against the AI For rule tinkerers
Go Game - BadukPop Turn-based, territory Lessons, AI, people 5 min a problem Taught step by step Matches are online The patient teacher
Checkers - Online & Offline Turn-based, 14 rule sets Solo, one device, online 5–15 min Known in a minute Yes, in every solo mode The reliable table
The Battle of Polytopia Turn-based strategy Solo maps, friends by turn About 30 min a map One map to learn it Yes, single player Most replayed here
Shattered Pixel Dungeon Turn-based roguelike Solo runs only 20 min to an evening Demanding, but fair Yes, the whole game Deepest on the desk
Path of Adventure: Text RPG Text, choice by choice Solo runs only 10–15 min a run Read it and go Yes, the whole game Best one-handed

These six were chosen because they cover the whole spread of the catalogue, from a five-minute problem to a map that fills an evening. The three left out — two crawlers and the real-time entry — sit close enough to titles already in the table that a second row would have repeated itself.
